10 words to unscramble, with an answer key on the next page for whoever is running it: rocket, planet, galaxy, astronaut, comet, launch, meteor, orbit, crater, alien.

Ages, timing and printing

• Ages 4 to 10. Younger children usually need a grown-up to read the bingo calling cards and the scavenger hunt list out loud.
• About two hours of party. Bingo runs 10 to 15 minutes, the scavenger hunt 15 to 20, charades as long as they are still laughing.
• Plain paper is fine for the signs, banner and hunt sheets. Card stock is worth it for the bingo cards, charades cards and cupcake toppers, since those get handled.
• US Letter, colour, single sided. Print the invitations first if the party is more than a week away.
• The cupcake toppers say BLAST OFF!, TO THE MOON, LET'S PARTY, HAPPY BDAY, 3 2 1 GO!, OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Space party ideas for young astronauts

• Turn the scavenger hunt into a moon-rock mission with foil-wrapped stones.
• Dim the lights for charades and hand the guesser a flashlight.
• Star stickers on the thank-you cards go a long way.
